The Clinic for Foreign Language Learning (CFLL) at the School of Foreign Languages set up in November 2016 was an innovative educational institution that combines foreign language capability assessment, personalized guidance of foreign language learning and frontier studies on foreign language learning. The long-term objective of the CFLL is to provide foreign language learning consultation and tracking services to all students and teachers of the University and in the meanwhile carry out the practical problem-oriented English teaching research by exerting the effort of all Chinese and foreign teachers of English who take the lead in both teaching and research. Not only does the Clinic draw on the sophisticated experiences of the language center in a worldly renowned university, but it also focuses on the particular difficulties of the English learners in China, especially those of Jiangsu University.
Currently, the CFLL fixes the following tasks for itself: (1) providing an individualized interpersonal tracking service of English learning consultation and planning and pronunciation training for all JSU students who find it hard to learn English well, as well as taking the initiative to develop the orientation course for College English and the courses or lectures for promoting the comprehensive skills suitable for students in our university; (2) providing the foreign language ability tracking assessment and the learning planning guidance concerned for the foreign language majors in the School of Foreign Languages, as well as assisting the development of the courses or lectures for promoting the foreign language comprehensive skills; (3) providing the one-to-one foreign language learning consultation and pronunciation training for all faculties of the University, especially the young teachers with a high motivation to learn a foreign language; (4) establishing a large-scale English Learning Consultation and Coaching Case Library, on the basis of which to carry out an empirical study on foreign language learning obstacles and foreign language learning strategies, with the view to nurturing the foreign language instruction of both foreign language majors and non-foreign language majors of the University with the frontier research achievements of the CFLL; (5) designing and developing on-the-job educational projects of all kinds suitable for faculties of the School to promote the teachers’ professional development; (6) collaborating with the Center for International Language Courses to arrange for the all students of the University to attend foreign language contests of all levels on and off campus.
The successful operation of the CFLL has been widely reported by the mainstream media in China, including China Education Daily, Sina, ChinaEdu, etc, thus spoken highly of by all. With the promotion of the consultation work and the improvement of the working conditions, the CFLL will attract more top-notch faculties to work at it, thus increasing both the business hours and the number of service receivers.
