History and Now:
The history of the English Department dates back, on the one hand, to 1958 when the English Education Program (a junior-college program) was initially offered at Zhenjiang campus of Nanjing Teachers’ College (the predecessor of Zhenjiang Teachers’ College). In 1996 the English Education Program (an undergraduate program) was jointly offered by Zhenjiang Teachers’ College and Nanjing Normal University. On the other hand, in 1984 the Foreign Trade English Program was offered in the former Jiangsu Institute of Technology (the predecessor of Jiangsu University), which in 1990 was granted the right to confer a bachelor’s degree by the Provincial Education Office of Jiangsu. Then in 2001 the English Department was set up together with the founding of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University.
We boast a faculty with a lot of teaching experiences, excellent teaching quality, a high level of academic research and a rational structure of age, educational background and academic title. Currently we have 26 full-time faculty members (excluding foreign teachers employed on a yearly basis), whose average age is about 41.58. Among the teaching faculty are 4 full professors, 8 associate professors that the holders of a senior professional title add up to a percentage of 46.15% of all teachers. All professors and associate professors of the English Department offer undergraduate courses, ranging from basic English skill courses to professional knowledge courses for English majors and non-English majors. 96.15% of the faculty hold a degree above the master’s level, including 8 PhDs.
We are aimed at cultivating interdisciplinary talents who will keep pace with the political, economic, cultural and sci-tech development of the Chinese society in the 21st century, who have a solid foundation in humanities and a broad scope of the professional knowledge of the English language, who are strong in practical ability, innovative consciousness, international vision, and teamwork spirit and communicative skills, who boast a good accomplishment in social sciences, a strong sense of social responsibility and a high level of professional ethics, who are capable of working on or at international communication and cooperation, foreign trade, multinationals, joint ventures, tourism services, and educational institutions. Our graduates are expected to become the mainstay of business and management of their employers.

Duration & Degree: a regular duration of 4 years plus a flexible duration of 3-8 years.
Based on the course type, the basic English skill courses include Basic English, Advanced English,Listening Comprehension, Oral English, Reading, Writing, Interpretation, Translation, etc. The professional knowledge courses of the English major include An Introduction to Linguistics, English Lexicology, A Contrastive Study of the English and the Chinese Language, A History of British and American Literature, Appreciation of British and American Literature, A Survey of English-speaking Countries, An Introduction to Western Culture, Intercultural Communication, A Comparative Study of English and Chinese Culture, etc. Professional knowledge courses that brook into other areas include economics, trade, pedagogue, etc.
The basic skill courses are focused on the cultivation of students’ basic skills in the English language, the professional knowledge courses on expanding the students’ scope of knowledge of the discipline, and the related professional knowledge courses on improving the students’ occupational skills and related knowledge systematically and rationally to pave the way for their future development. Currently, the course of Basic English and the courses subsumed under the title of British and American Literature have been ranked among the 842T Excellent Courses of Jiangsu University; History and Anthology of British Literature is approved to be one of the 2016 Online Open Course Projects of Jiangsu University.
Our graduates of the English Program are welcome on the job market. They are mainly employed by institutions of higher learning, key schools, government offices, foreign enterprises, and other employers from the developed coastal areas of China. The percentage of the English graduates to work for a master’s degree in distinguished colleges and universities both in China and abroad is steadily rising. The famous institutions of higher learning include Harvard University, New York University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Nanking University, Southeast University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai Foreign Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Nanjing Normal University, Jiangsu University, etc. In recent years, the percentage of graduate employment rate of the English majors of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University has been respectively 98.56%, 98.5% and 99.17%. Our graduates are commonly commended by their employers mainly from banks, schools and other educational institutions in the Yangtse River Delta area.
